Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – Onslaught hands on

The online fps world is full of players that spend every waking moment trying to perfect their game.  For a player that is just starting out is can be very daunting and even off putting as you stats go down the tube.

No matter how well you do in the campaign, the multiplayer element is another ball game altogether.  With that in mind DICE are just about to release a piece of DLC which may ease your way in to the multiplayer forray of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 aptly named Onslaught.

Mature-gaming were lucky enough to get a chance to play it at the EA Showcase and due to an embargo we can now tell all!  We can say that this was the most played game at the Showcase by myself and Chris and rightly so, it’s an absolute blast and will be a welcome addition to the Bad Company 2 stable.

Onslaught is set over four different maps, Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Inocentes and Nelson Bay, although each map has been changed slightly to include different times of day, visibility conditions and also different types of enemy and vehicles to give the maps a more unique feel.  Each map will also have four different difficulty levels that will appeal to the more casual player as well as the hardcore and will definitely challenge all comers as you team up in a squad of between two and four players in an effort to work as a team to capture each base and lock it down.

Each map and difficulty will have timed leaderboards as you find the best way to approach each base and take it down.  Team work is definitely the call of the day here as your individual times will get posted up for everyone to beat.  We had great fun with this and actually got our time down from about 8 minutes to around 4.30 which has been given the big thumbs up from the DICE team!  Another great thing is that you will be able to bring all of your kit in from your multiplayer loadouts to use within the DLC.

The gameplay itself can be challenging but not impossible.  Working your way up to the bases is quite simple but the fun starts when you attempt to take it over.  Taking out the initial guards is simple enough but as you are trying to hold the base, enemies will parachute in, pull up in vehicles and try to flank you.  Taking these out are crucial in your attempt to bring your times down as it will slow down your progression in capturing the base.  If you think of the DLC as a mix of Hoarde and Conquer then you will be on the right path.

Overall, Onslaught presents itself really well but I know there will be some people that think they will be short changed upon purchasing it.  If you are one of them then you will need to open your mind to the possibilities this presents.  You will be paying for a gametype with four initial maps.  This may seem short but when you consider that all the map packs are free then Onslaught becomes a different proposition.

As has been agreed, you are paying for the gametype here and DICE has more than enough ability to add extra maps on when map packs are released so initially, you may feel short changed initially but there is endless possibility when it comes to inevitably expanding this gametype which will cost you nada.

If you’re a Battlefield fan then you will want to purchase it.  If you have purchased Battlefield but have had doubts about getting into the online element then this is a great way to get your skills dialled in beforehand.  I already know one person that as bought the game after playing the DLC.  In short, it is a must buy!

There is no word on pricing yet but the DLC is set to land on the 360 on the 2nd June and the PS3 a couple of weeks later.  Unfortunately PC owners of the title will have to wait a little longer as there would be issues with regard to the dedicated servers which DICE are currently looking into.
