Borderlands: The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned: Reviewed (PS3, 360)

I think everyone that has played Borderlands by now has absolutely fell in love with it.A nice blend of RPG and FPS with some serious comedy one liners put this at the top of many gamers playlists.  Only after a month or so since the games release sees the release of its first DLC called The Zombie Island Of Dr Ned.  Now call me a sceptic but most DLC that I have seen is not worth the points or money that is used to purchase it.  Very rarely does DLC stand out to a point where you can say “Wow, that really added to the experience”.  Yes, you get some good maps but along with it you get the bad ones too.

The Borderlands DLC, however, provides enough expanse to the game (not that its needed) to justify the purchase.  Obviously, The Zombie Island Of Dr Ned and all that it entails is perfect for a Halloweenish release and if a game can pull off the type of zombie mayhem that this piece of DLC can deliver then it is Borderlands.

Set on the beautifully designed island which is very easy to get to via the fast travel system, I entered with my pimped up soldier at level 42 wielding my manly hellfire and an assortment of other weaponry.  As with playthrough 2 at a high level, the island offers up enough of a challenge and adapts its creatures to whatever level you are at ala the main game so if you think you will breeze through it, which you mainly will, there will be enough of a challenge to keep the main quest going for nearly 2 hours.  If you think about how much you pay for a 6 – 7 hour experience in other full priced games then the £7 ish price tag is a bargain.

The creatures on offer are obviously zombies but there are a few more to shoot to shite.  Slow moving zombies provide the easiest targets as you rattle off a couple of hundred rounds and down the little buggers.  The animations are smooth and hit them right and their heads will pop off for you to collect their brains from.  There is a reason for the brains which I won’t go into and spoil the fun.  Other types include torso’s crawling along the floor which can be missed at first, psycho zombies, midget zombies (you know I have a thing for midgets) and the badass tankensteins among others.  Basically, they are zombie revamps of the creatures in the main game but don’t let that put you off.  They way they move and feel are different and although they are the main creatures re-skinned they provide enough of a challenge as you fend off wave after wave of the bleighters in a blood soaked killing frenzy.

The side stories also provide a lot of fun and something a bit different.  It is the same point A to point B mission style but provides enough of a journey to make your way around the island in comedic glory.  There are so many little odes to the zombie movies to take in but the action is so frantic sometimes that it may well be missed.  TK’s Braaaaaiiiiinnnnnnsssss.  mmmmmmm is a prime example and the zombie attacks themselves remind me of Dawn of the Dead etc.

Overall the DLC provides a clear, concise and deep experience.  Well, as deep as Borderlands will give you and wil provide a few hours of gameplay.  The main gripe with it is yet again the slow own that happens when too much is going on at any one time.  The dreaded Unreal Engine rises its ugly head again I’m afraid but if it didn’t bother you in the main part of the game then it won’t bother you too much now.

If you have Borderlands then this is a must buy.  Simply because it adds another playing field to get your teeth into and is a welcome break to running around in the main campaign.
