Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes to the Mac

Square Enix Ltd today announces the international blockbuster action-RPG video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be released as an Ultimate Edition for Mac on April 26.

Developed by Eidos-Montréal and brought to the Mac platform by Feral Interactive, Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Ultimate Edition will contain the acclaimed Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the Explosive Mission and Tactical Enhancement packs as well as the Deus Ex: Human Revolution -The Missing Link DLC. It will also include a 40-page book of concept art and a bonus disc, featuring a 44-minute “Making of” documentary, a motion comic, animated storyboard, CGI trailer and the game’s soundtrack, composed by Michael McCann.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Ultimate Edition for the Mac is published by Feral Interactive, and will retail in North America for US $49.99, £34.99 (inc. VAT) in the UK and €39.99 (inc. VAT) throughout Europe.

Fallout: New Vegas releases today

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition announced

Worms Ultimate Mayhem – Review (XBLA, PSN, Steam)

Worms has a place in my gaming heart for being one of the most addictive, 2D strategy franchises ever and as an avid player of many a retro title I can safely say that the Worms franchise belongs amongst the greats like Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder in their respective genres.

Worms has also had many versions and iterations of itself made, each cuddling up to the 2D playing style that made the franchise famous in the first place but a strange thing happened in 2003. Worms went 3D for the first time ever and although the game was well versed and designed in typical fashion, the 3D element felt, for me personally, a little too far removed from what made Worms great in the first place. Adding horizontal, as well as vertical, aiming for instance brought a few problems to the table, including clipping took Worms away from the joyous simplicity that the franchise had built it’s reputation on.

Move on a couple of years and Worms 4: Mayhem gets a release bringing Worms back to what it knows best. Simple and addictive strategic and comedic warfare played out in well designed 2D levels and it is there that we join the latest version of Worms with Team 17 having a crack at marrying the two mentioned titles together to create one hefty package weighing in at 1200 MP for the Xbox 360 and £10.99 for PC on steam with the PSN version being released soon.

Again, the concept of the game being 3D is a strange one to swallow at first but grinning and bearing a few rounds will have you up to speed in no time at all. For those of you not versed in either the mechanics and strategies of Worms or getting to grips with the 3D aspect of the game may want to visit the “University” for a quick guide on what you’re meant to be doing and how the interfaces work. Those of you really familiar with the game will now need to think of new strategies in your 3D environments to succeed.

There’s plenty going on in the game with over 70 single player missions and challenges to play through that is entwined in a loose, but funny storyline. If that’s not big enough for you, various challenges and 3D story modes are present to which fill out an already bursting at the seems experience. An ideal way to re-imagine the Worms title, Worms Ultimate Mayhem still has all of the turn based, worms comedy and general mayhem that you would expect in a franchise title but delivered in a first person shooter kind of way when you’re aiming.

Customisation is also plentiful and alongside being able to custom create your own team you can also customise some weaponry too. OK, so you’re not going to be the next Oppenheimer, inventor of the modern day atomic bomb, but there is some cheeky bits of crafting to be had that will produce the required reaction – DEAD!

For all of the grandeur and largeness of the single player experience, this only serves as an appetiser for the main staple of any Worms game and that is the multi player side. Present in online or offline games, Worms Ultimate Mayhem provides the environments, customisation of teams and toolsets of weapons to provide decades of fun for any Worms officienado, both young and old – yeah, my son plays it too! Deathmatch and Destruction will be the most memorable ports of call from any Worms game with Homefront, Statue Defend, Survivor et al all taking a bow in a chaotic turn based atmosphere for up to 4 teams with added CPU if needed.

Worms Ultimate Mayhem is not without its faults though and the 3D element, I feel, maybe a little at fault at times. Hit detection can be slightly off in places and along with clipping and quirky camera angles at times make for Worms Ultimate Mayhem to not be the complete flowing experience of some of its predecessors. Loading times are pretty slow as well which in this day and age, based on the core speeds of consoles and PC’s shouldn’t even come into question. Saying that though these are niggles rather than game breakers and need to be treated as such.

Overall, Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a somewhat different experience but for the most part a very satisfying one. There is no denying the quality and size of the content which makes for outstanding value for money. Worms Ultimate Mayhem has also kept its cute, comedy appeal and whilst marrying two versions of Worms together have provided plenty of modes to play and added some great little features to the mix. Initially, Worms fans may be turned off by the 3D conversion but sticking with it will provide you with an experience where you maybe learning again the strategies of that extra dimension but in the end will find the game very rewarding.
