Opponents can counter by adding or subtracting players to the wall, creeping the wall forward, or sending a bullet man to intercept the pass or block the shot.

EA Sports UEFA EURO 2012 will be available as a paid digital expansion pack to fans who own EA Sports FIFA 12 on the PS3,  Xbox 360 and PC. The videogame will be available to fans beginning April 24, 2012.

EA Sports UEFA EURO 2012 recreates all the drama and excitement of the official tournament with all 53 UEFA member national teams, all eight official stadiums in the tournament, and all the pageantry and atmosphere of one of the largest and most-watched sporting events on the planet. Fans will be able to compete online for national pride and glory as their favourite European country in the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament against rival nations in the group stage, progress through the sudden victory knockout rounds, and ultimately compete for the chance to be crowned UEFA EURO 2012 champion. To kick off the Madden NFL 13 Cover Vote bracket debate, a SportsNation“Madden Cover Vote Special” will air tonight on ESPN 2 from 6-7 p.m. ET.  Every Wednesday throughout the campaign, fans can tune in to SportsNationat 5 p.m. ET for an in-depth discussion about the latest voting results and to see which players have advanced to the next round. The tournament will culminate with the reveal of the Madden NFL 13 cover athlete on SportsNationon April 25, the night before the 2012 NFL Draft.

Last year, nearly 13 million votes were cast through ESPNSportsNation.com and ESPN mobile in both companies’ most successful cross-platform activation. Tenth-seeded Cleveland Browns running back, Peyton Hillis, trucked through the six week competition all the way to the ultimate end zone – the Madden NFL 12 cover.

This year’s competition will incorporate more athletes and more chances to vote as the field has been expanded to 64 NFL players, putting even more control in the hands of the fans. Beginning today through March 21, fans can visit the SportsNation Facebook page to choose among the 64 candidates in a play-in round (each matchup features two players from the same NFL team) to advance to the official 32-player, seeded tournament.  The winners of the play-in round will be unveiled with the official seeded, 32-player bracket on March 21 on ESPN’s “Madden Cover Vote Special” from 5-6p.m. EST.  To ensure their favorite player advances to the next round, fans are encouraged to vote daily and tweet their picks using #MyMaddenCoverVote on Twitter.  Every Wednesday between March 21 and April 25, fans can tune into SportsNation on ESPN2at 5p.m. EST to check out the latest Madden NFL 13Cover Vote standings.

It was in November, 2000, the millennium was in full swing and the PS2 was being released in 3 days time.  I was, at the time, working for an Independent video chain in Brighton and my PS2 was sitting there ready for me to take home, along with SSX, Tekken Tag Tournament and Timesplitters.  EA Big had invested big in promoting this title and with nervous anticipation I unboxed the PS2 at the house of a very jealous friend and put that dvd in.  What followed was a couple of hours of jaw dropping fun until the early hours when the Jack  Daniels took effect and it was time to go to bed.  My love affair for SSX, its huge jumps, crazy characters, beautiful presentation and over the top tricks.  After a 5 year gap I was pleased and very hopeful when a reboot of the franchise was announced and SSX was reborn.

So, now that SSX is just about to be released how does it stack up against the other titles in the franchise?  Well, my love affair and feelings for SSX have been reignited after a few years in the wilderness.

From the moment you drop out of a plane at 30,000 metres above the mountains and start your basic trick practice you start to feel immediately at one with the controller and how it operates your character.  Using the stick or face buttons to trick offers a fluidity that feels right at home with any of the other SSX titles.

It’s only when you land and face your first run that you see how the much touted NASA mapping technology comes into play to provide a realistic feeling to the 9 areas that you explore whilst, giving way to over 150 courses each laid out in crazy over the top possibilities that are renowned in SSX games.  This brings in the loose story to the game which provides various opportunities to unlock items and equipment as well as score XP to level up any of the characters that you choose.  I won’t go into story detail too much suffice to say that the SSX team has been formed, one member broke away to start his own team and own all 9 deadly descents and it is down to you lot to complete them before him.  Cue, playing the choice of three different disciplines set in various locations around the world to score more, beat the opposition or just flat out survive the run. Although it seems the disciplines are shallow, each one has been finely honed to provide explosive and exciting balls out experience.

All of the key SSX formulas come back into play as you try and find the perfect lines down the run and build up enough boost by performing tricks that can be linked together for combos to score against your opponent on the tricks discipline or to try and overtake in a race.  As you build up money and unlock more items, certain modifiers or equipment can also be purchased to help you along the way.  Some runs actually need certain equipment in order for you to ride them, each with their own stats on health regeneration, damage limitations etc, etc.  Armour, for example, is needed if you are to attempt one of the deadly descents due to  the treacherous conditions and ice picks are always handy on a course with more ice on them to provide deeper turning possibilities.  It’s important to note that equipping certain items on certain courses will benefit you greatly and prompts before your attempt at a course will perhaps help you decide what you need the next time you run it.

Once on a run the smooth and intuitive control system really gets the best out of the game.  Dropping into the course is as easy as pushing forward on the left stick whilst performing tricks is done with the right or face buttons.  The way the game helps your character in subtle ways provides a fluidity that maximises your performance rather than detracts from it.  An example of this is riding near trees and wiping out.  Unless there is no way out the game gently eases you close but not into it trying to give you maximum opportunity to have a smooth run without being scuppered.  Normally this would have a negative effect in a game but in SSX it really adds to the experience of finding that perfect run or finding the best lines.

Scoring on tricks is also very easy as you combo moves together in a fluid way and cashing them in by stopping the combo.  It is all well and good getting a big score but to beat some of them will require a mammoth effort.  There is, however, a rewind feature that allows you to go backwards and undo some of your mistakes whether it be missing a rail or falling down a crevasse.  There is also a point penalty for the amount of time you use this feature so a quick missed rail may benefit you using it but a big wipe out would be better off restarting the run.

The premise of the story and the way that characters, equipment and mods are unlocked as well as earning credits only serves as a starter to the real main course.  Explore will have you racing and tricking down 153 courses for medal placings (bronze, silver, gold etc) whilst registering these runs on Ridernet, the SSX version of Autolog which provides details, times and scores from your friends and other players worldwide for you to beat.  It seems to be a standard fare now in EA games but the evolution in online gaming that this feature as well as autolog has provided seems a natural fit in an environment where competition is king in a relaxed way.

Last but not least is the Global Events feature which provides competition between you and up to 100,000 players at a time.  Certain events and locations are setup and publicised world wide in which anyone can partake.  You pay the required amount of credits and which is pooled together to create a prize fund which will be split between medal positions at the end of the competition.  Each medal has a target to attain which will potentially reward you with credits depending on how well you have done and you normally have a few days in which to get the biggest score or fastest time you can.  It a cool feature to have and could well develop into something as breakthrough as autolog has done.

Overall, SSX brings has been needed in this gens consoles.  Formulaic shooters and stale genre rehashes have started to make gaming become a stale environment for some.  There are so many new ideas crammed into SSX, including geo tagging, a mod that can be placed on any course for someone to get , whilst you earn credits and XP points, that sometimes it is hard to know where to start.

SSX keeps its roots faithful but at the same time EA Canada have given it a present day twist that excels in every area, overflowing with ingenuity. It is rare that a franchise this old can still provide something that makes you go “Wow”.  Graphically beautiful, smooth as silk and a soundtrack that gets the heart racing as you hurtle down a mountain with eyes on stalks is as close as it’s going get to reviving a generation that is starting to wane.  If you have a spare few pennies then this is a must buy.
