PS Vita system, which launched in early 2012, will offer video calling capabilities and voice calling on both the Wi-Fi and 3G models. PS Vita system users can download the application for free from the “Social” category of the PlayStation Store today across PAL territories.

“Our users appreciate being able to access Skype features wherever and whenever they choose,” said Manrique Brenes, senior director of emerging opportunities at Skype.   “With the launch of Skype for PS Vita, we are taking another step towards our ultimate goal of making Skype video calling available on every platform, all over the world, and meeting the demands of existing PlayStation users to offer video on a gaming console.”

Skype on PS Vita system runs in “background mode” for users while gaming or using other applications and users have the capability to “pause” a game, conduct a call and then return to their previous activity.  Additionally, PS Vita system features both front and rear facing cameras, which allows users to switch back and forth between the two during a Skype call. This is a great benefit of never missing a call even when playing a game or using another app.

PS Vita system is available for €249.99 (RRP) for Wi-Fi and €299.99 (RRP) for Wi-Fi/3G models.  The device is also equipped with a 5” OLED screen (touchscreen), rear touch pad, dual analog sticks, two cameras and a built in microphone.

The demo will feature two tracks for gamers to experience: a race event in the Rockies and a trick event in New Zealand. The online enabled demo will allow players to get a taste of the competition provided in the SSX main game mode – Explore. The demo will only be available for download until March 20, 2012. SSX is now featured on 15 ‘Most Anticipated Games of 2012’ lists including IGN and Videogamer.com. SSX launches on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 28 in North America and by March 2 in the rest of the world.

Mimicking the Explore experience that will be in the final product, as players post race times and trick scores in the demo, ghosts of those runs will be uploaded to the SSX server. These ghosts are exact replicas of a player’s run, from the line that they took, to the tricks that they performed. Players will then be able to challenge their friends’ ghosts or let their own ghosts chalk up wins and losses, while they’re away from their console.

“When crafting the online experience for this new SSX, we wanted to design something that took into account people’s busy schedules and addressed the issue of not always having friends to play online with you at the same time” says Todd Batty, Creative Director, SSX. “The Explore game mode, which allows you to challenge your friends’ times and scores on your own schedule, is one part of that online design. Here is a summary of what it includes:

• The Internet Browser has been improved. This will result in better display of content and page layouts are displayed with greater accuracy. Some websites that could not be displayed correctly prior to the release of PS3 system software 4.10, including interactive websites, are now supported.
• You can automatically set the time more accurately via the Internet every time your PS3 system connects to PlayStation Network (PSN). This can be done via [Settings] > [Date and Time Settings] > [Set Automatically] on the XMB (XrossMediaBar).
• PSN Account will be renamed Sony Entertainment Network Account. This will not result in any changes to how you log in or the details you use to do so.

In order to download PS3 system software version 4.10, you will need a minimum 180MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).
