With Brink only a week or so away, Bethesda has released some pretty impressive stats and figures regarding the title.

Set to put a fire under the current genre’s lack of originality, Bethesda has confirmed that over 100 quadrillion unique characters can be created. It’s no joke either but we are talking every variation of tint etc being added into the math to flesh things out a little.

A recent report claims Bungie Studio; creators of the Halo franchise have started work on an MMO FPS style game titled Destiny.

The game is believed to be a sci-fi shooter described as “WoW in space.” The source claims the game will run on Bungie’s new graphics engine and feature unique online connectivity and matchmaking technology.

Kotaku reports that a contractor leaked the information after his contract was terminated as well as him being miss treated at Bungie.

Bungie responded to this claim, with an official statement: “The claim is false. Bungie has never been asked to lay off any employees or contract employees by our publisher, Activision-Blizzard, for any reason. The talented professionals who grace our offices day in and day out are the lifeblood of Bungie – our most cherished commodity – and the unsubstantiated rumors posted today are in direct opposition to the culture and values that we believe make Bungie an exceptional place to work, and to call home.”

Call Of Duty will go down in gaming history, at present, as one of the most popular franchises of all time. Breaking records on every release and providing some of the most memorable experiences for gamers.

Infinity War has always been the big brother in terms of the development with Treyarch slightly behind developing Call Of Duty games that were great, but arguably, not brilliant in terms of their releases.

So after a record breaking Modern Warfare 2 release, Call Of Duty: Black Ops, in a lot of people’s minds has some pretty big boots to fill. Well not for me. Anybody that knows me will realise that I didn’t feel Modern Warfare 2 at all. The life of the franchise got sucked out after the original Modern Warfare experience. So perfect in my mind was Modern Warfare that any Call Of Duty titles afterwards had to match up to this title. World Of War was great but the second world war theatre of war was tired. I loved the inclusion of zombies, the multiplayer was balanced with some well designed maps. It didn’t stand up to Infinity Ward’s original Modern Warfare bohemeth. Then along came Modern Warfare 2. People will probably want to rip my throat out for saying this but in my mind, Modern Warfare 2 was the most overhyped, unbalanced, glitchy pile of poo that had come from the Infinity Ward stable. There, I said it. I know that a lot of people may also agree.

So with Black Ops it is a case of whether the game can win me over by refining the experience rather than how it stands up to Modern Warfare 2 and I feel privileged that Activision has sent me the game to review. If they had read what I have just written about a year ago then I would be dead in their eyes but there is a reason why I have written this now and that is to say that Treyarch have risen above their big brother and provided me with an experience that has not gone over the top in terms of narrative, has designed well balanced maps and a multiplayer system that has made me start to fall in love with the franchise all over again. Basically, it is looking and playing like how Call Of Duty should, not what it had started to become.

The campaign basis itself in the Cold War era during the 60′s where tension was high, paranoia was great and a real nuclear war nearly kicked off as a result. For the most part, you play a Black Ops specialist named Mason that is being interrogated for information which leads you via flashbacks to different areas of the war and also sets up your mission structure. So clever is the narrative and how it seamlessly drops you into different environments, including, Hong Kong, Cuba, Vietnam and Russia that you feel as though the story could have come from a movie script writer.

The missions themselves vary with good pacing and movie interludes that sometimes give you an element of control back in the game whilst viewing them. There are also a lot of stand out moments here too including a Deer Hunter, Russian roulette scene, stopping a missile launch and storming a ship to name a few. Missions also take a nice turn in the way that you also play other people in missions building up to an event you have just completed. It is fresh, feels smooth and is definitely not disjointed.

Graphically, Call Of Duty Black Ops doesn’t feel as polished as Modern Warfare 2 but I feel that this is to the game’s advantage. I feel that a lot of developers can concentrate on how pretty the game looks and completely miss out on a smooth experience. Treyarch seemed to have thought about this and have provided a smooth frame rate with no drops that I was aware of which definitely helped with the immersion of the experience. Don’t get me wrong here. The game still looks beautiful, it really does and losing that extra little bit of sheen that Infinity Ward would put on their games has really paid dividends for Black Ops.

Now, every Call Of Duty is judged, not solely, on it’s multiplayer. I have already stated that I didn’t appreciate how Infinity Ward, in my mind, got it so wrong with Modern Warfare 2. It seemed to be a case of throw everything but the kitchen sink at it which unfortunately ruined the experience for me. Sometimes, less is more but it went on to break records everywhere it sold so perhaps my criticisms will be laughed at.

Anyway, Treyarch have got hold of the reigns and hauled the multiplayer back in to its rightful place. All of the elements that have made Call Of Duty so much fun through the years are there but without all the fuss and clutter that could have surrounded it. The maps feel more balanced and better designed, the weaponry is solid which is still unlocked through levelling up along with perks but the attachments are now free to buy through COD points that you now earn alongside your XP.

COD points act as an in game currency that can be spent buying and customising your weaponry to give you the things you like sooner rather than waiting for the necessary level to unlock them. The points can also be used in a new gametype called wager matches which will allow you to bet a certain amount of points in the game you are about to play. Get in the top 3 and you will take a percentage of the points from everybody else, lose and of course your points will be given to the top 3. There is a lot at stake but with the risks come rewards and those gifted enough will be able to get what they want a little bit quicker.

All of the usual gametypes are there, including zombies for some co-operative multiplayer mayhem. You all know how this plays out by now and still remains a lot of fun to have a bash around when you tire of getting fragged for the night. There literally is something for everyone in terms of gametypes, including hardcore and a little something we found called bare bones. This speaks for itself and takes your weaponry back to the basics. No perks, no attachments just plain old run and gun action that will appeal to many who do not want to get caught up in the general chaos that Call Of Duty affords.

Overall, Treyarch have brought back the Call Of Duty franchise with Black Ops. Although past games have sold by the tanker load I felt that Call Of Duty was sliding and whatever developers had done to inject life into it just wasn’t working. Yes, there are problems with lag and really dodgy spawning but at least Treyarch are talking to their customers and fans. As in all games of this calibre, communication is key when things are a little off. The campaign puts you into a theatre of war that is fresh and works with precision, the multiplayer has been scaled back and re-worked to bring back balance and enjoyment. Call Of Duty Black Ops has got me right where it wants me. Definitely back but I’m not fading with Black!

From the makers of the hit arcade shooter Battlefield Heroes comes an all-new entry in the free to play market, this time featuring photo-real characters, environments, weapons and maps.

EA today announced Battlefield Play4Free, a deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and intense 32-player online battles. With its advanced graphics, polished production values, depth and realism, Battlefield Play4Free takes the genre to the next level and is positioned to compete with top console titles. The game goes live in spring 2011. Players who wish to get in the game sooner can register today for the closed beta at www.battlefield.play4free.com.com which launches on Nov 30.

“We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for,” said James Salt, Senior Producer, Battlefield Play4Free. “Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium – but free – experience that rivals top console titles.”

Combining the most popular maps from Battlefield 2 with the familiar classes and powerful weapons of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, players have access to 16 vehicles including the Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter, its nemesis the F35 VTOL jet fighter, the massive Russian T-90 main battle tank, and the hard to catch LSV light strike vehicle. Players progress through the game to learn new combat skills, and earn in-game currency to spend on a massive array of devastating weapons and equipment.
