EA Montreal today released an all-new co-op campaign map pack titled ‘Chapters of Deceit’ on Xbox Live for the award-winning, ARMY OF TWO: THE 40th DAY.

The map pack will be available on April 1 on the PlayStation Network. ARMY OF TWO: THE 40th DAY – Chapters of Deceit puts players back amidst the disaster in Shanghai where they will stumble upon new information that could help end the invasion by Jonah and his 40th Day Initiative army.

There are quite a few positive things you can say about Borderlands and its DLC. One is that Borderlands has brought a fun factor and addictiveness back to gaming and another is that the support that has given to the game via DLC and updates has added extra elements to the game which have certainly been positive. Both DLC elements, so far, have been received well both by ourselves and also the media in general so here we are, with the third piece of DLC in the name of The Secret Armoury Of General Knoxx upon us and the quality has not let up at all. In fact, if anything, Gearbox will now have some big boots to fill if and when they release another piece of content in the future.

Where The Zombie Island Of Dr Ned delivered more story lines, separate from the original story and Mad Moxxi provided the all guns blazing, hoarde type environments with somewhere to bank your weapons, Gearbox have listened to their followers and General Knoxx provides a storyline that follows on directly from the original and adds a whole host of extra features including lifting the level cap up to 61.

The story itself is simple. After the opening of the vault, Atlas have taken over Pandora to try and assert calm and order into an otherwise unforgiving environment where chaos has started to rule. With any corporate takeover there comes an element of control, a lot of it! You’re job, if you decide to accept it, is to take down the evil empire and give freedom back to the land you know and love.

With the added storyline and side quests Gearbox have increased the level cap, provided new weapons, enemies and balanced the game via a patch. If anyone thought that Borderlands had become easy then entering into the General Knoxx DLC will make you change your mind in a flash. I had a problem with running around as a level 50 soldier or hunter and a hellfire as the game had become easy. Even to kill a burning psycho at top level wasn’t a problem and didn’t require a weapon change. Entering the General Knoxx arena changed my mind very quickly and it became apparent after getting downed a few times that I had to really think about what weapons were going to be effective in destroying what enemy.

The challenge is back, the toughness is there but Borderlands has also become very well balanced indeed. You need to think and work for your gains and treasure and to be quite honest, the game really needed it. The fights are tough but not tough enough for you to give up on and although some of the driving elements are long between goals, if you look carefully enough you may find the odd band of crazed midgets holed up in a little village under the road.

The enemies themselves are varied and fun, each with certain attributes that cause a weapon switch and even to go back and rethink your skill tree to adapt it to help you through in an easier way. Rocketeers with jetpacks that fire at you from above, midgets riding on skags and medical lancers who toss a turret to the floor and regain health are all present. Each provides different ways to combat them and each will get harder as your levels go up. There are many and all varied that will provide the challenge you craved for in the first 10 – 15 levels of the original story.

When enemies are this hard, you need the firepower to deal with it. You start to realise that a lot of the weapons you may have will not be as effective as in the original so its time to start hunting all over again. Again they are varied and with finding rare weapons mods on you will find your fare share of gold weapons, although these may not be as powerful as you need. Saying that though I managed to pick up a beast of a weapon with good damage, nice elemental multipliers and a fire rate that rips the lance probes that patrol the highways down within a second. They are out there but with all exploration you need to open all chests, check all the vending machines and loot, loot, loot to find them.

Overall, The Secret Armoury Of General Knoxx is a beast of a piece of DLC, weighing in at over 1.5GB, Gearbox have yet again provided something that most developers will not achieve. Extra content at a price that if you put another 400 points onto would still be considered great value for money. Rich in features, new depths of gameplay on a lot of levels put General Knoxx at the top of the pile. Now if you can lift that level cap again Gearbox I would be a very happy bunny as this game is certainly not dying any time soon.

Gearbox have announced the third piece of DLC yesterday which will be called “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx”.Not a lot of details have been forthcoming but obviously we would expect to see this released over the next couple of months on 360, PC and PS3. This next DLC will take Borderlanders back to standard mission based DLC in a huge environment and from whispers and a few tweets from the right people, will be a lot bigger than The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned.

The DLC will also introduce new monsters and weapons and also increase the level cap but no news on how far has been released. Gearbox has said the experience is designed “for growth for characters from around level 34 to level 50.”

We will bring you further news and developments as the occur and of course the inevitable screenshots and review when we get our mitts on it.

With the amount of multiplayer options now in every game, token co-operative modes can be somewhat missed.Games are very few that base themselves solely around a co-operative experience but in March 2008, EA took a risk with a new IP called Army Of Two. The title was to an extent hit but had quite a bit wrong with it. The partner A.I. was flaky, enemy A.I. was worse, characters that were not endearing and became annoying and the control system was flawed. That being said, Army Of Two was a good game with bags of potential and definitely sold enough to warrant EA Montreal having another stab at it with Army Of Two: The 40th Day.

Army Of Two: The 40th Day sees our protagonists, Salem and Rios dumped into Shanghai on a mission to find out that it is about to rain shit on their parade. What transpires are more action sequences than the Karma Sutra in a gun porn frenzy of a ride into Shanghai’s key locations. This is the first difference to the game. Army Of Two sets its stall out in parts of Shanghai with well designed, yet linear levels with enough cover to blast your way out of situations and use strategy’s to progress.

The game itself is a vast improvement on its predecessor in terms of working together as a team single player experience. Army Of Two’s A.I. partner felt wrong and made the wrong choices at the most inopportune moments and this has been addressed by EA to not force you to find a friend or an online partner to play the game with. The decision making has been remarkably improved and allows for a good single player experience without the frustration from its previous offering. That being said, it is always a lot more fun to find a human partner to run through the game with as Army Of Two: The 40th Day demands team work to be able to enjoy the experience effectively but at least you’re safe in the knowledge that if you are on your own you will not be disappointed.

The enemy A.I. has also had a bit of an overhaul with more tactical responses from the enemy. They will, if given the chance, try to flank you and take up positions that will put you under a little pressure which is a very good thing. The use of the Aggro meter is actually an element that works now as you or your partner draws fire whilst the other finds a position to take the enemy out. It is not perfect though as I have found on a couple of occasions that the enemy have remained stuck to their spot and do not fire at you even though you are looking straight ahead at them. This has only happened a couple of times an has not really affected the gameplay too much, just made it a tad easier to progress through a certain area.

The combat in Army Of Two: The 40th Day is pretty solid too with enough going on to keep you on your toes and enough breathing space to be able to make decisions for you and your partner on how to take out enemies in an area of gameplay. The control system is a lot more fluid but there are very minor problems with the hit boxes to the enemy. Cross hairs have been on someone, only for the bullet to not make contact, this can be a little frustrating but again, only happens on occasion so it is not a big worry. It seems to happen when you are trying to squeeze a bullet through a tight spot so watch out for that. The cover system which the game builds itself around still needs looking at but is a vast improvement on the original. It is a lot easier to take cover now but the way it is handled is a little wooly and can leave you with your arse sticking out, sucking up bullets if not performed correctly. I hink everyone will agree that the Gears Of War cover system is the pinnacle of this style of gameplay and although EA Montreal have gone to great lengths to better this system it is still not perfect.

Graphically, Army Of Two: The 40th Day looks beautiful with some amazing lighting effects and rendering. There is the odd clipping moment but nothing that will put you off too much and is by far the biggest advancement on Army Of Two, along wih improved A.I. that I have seen in the game.

Overall, Army Of Two: The 40th Day is a well presented, vastly improved third person cover shooter and will provide a challenging and fun experience on single player, split screen and multiplayer experience that forces you to work as a team to progress. The advancements in most elements of the game and array of customisation with weaponry will provide you with a lot of fun. Army Of Two: The 40th Day is by no means perfect but has addressed quite a few of the major issues in the first game but just stops short of becoming the behemoth that Army Of Two could be.

Salem and Rios, stars of action/shooter Army of Two: The 40th Day, have caused chaos in London during a promotional stop-off to promote the game’s upcoming release. The pair’s antics, captured in a new trailer released today, show Salem and Rios speaking with BBC 1Xtra’s Rampage Crew – Mike Anthony and Treble T – getting Kara Tointon to do their make-up, signing copies of the game for fans (including The Inbetweeners star and robot dance maestro Blake Harrison), rocking out with music act Pint Shot Riot, and generally creating havoc all over the city.

The trailer utilises the same incredible CGI technology last seen when Salem and Rios headed to EA’s Montreal studios.

Army of Two: The 40th Day is out on January 15th 2010 on Xbox 360, PS 3 and PSP.
