THQ have today confirmed that a DLC pack for Metro 2033 nearly ready to go and will be available soon.The ‘Ranger Pack’ adds new weapons, new achievements and the deadly ‘Ranger Mode’ game rules. In standard Ranger Mode, ammo is dramatically reduced and all weapons cause more damage. Your foes are deadlier than ever – but so are you! ‘Ranger Hardcore’ adds an additional challenge as the HUD is totally removed, creating the most immersive Metro 2033 experience yet. Rise to the challenge with two new weapons – the Heavy Automatic Shotgun, and the Volt Driver, Miller’s signature gun. New achievements and 250 Gamerscore points are up for grabs.

The Ranger Pack will be released on both Xbox LIVE Marketplace and Steam in the very near future, with pricing to be confirmed closer to release.

Grab on to your seats and prepare yourself for the final launch trailer for Metro 2033 that is released tomorrow.

We’ve made big noises about this title since our hands on session last month that looks to set the story driven fps genre on fire with an elaborate mix of story telling, tension and tech produced on the 360 that has never been seen before. Metro 2033 may well be this years sleeper hit if our hands on preview is anything to go by. See for yourself below what you can expect and look for our review, hopefully very soon.

Metro 2033 is released tomorrow as a 360 console exclusive along with a PC version that has an awesome 3D option for those with the tech to play it. Don’t forget that if the PC version is purchased on day one you will receive a free copy of Red Faction Guerilla on the PC to compliment it.

THQ have released a new trailer this morning titled Ghosts Of The Metro.

As you can see below, the trailer shows some of the supernatural encounters and goings on you will have to deal with whilst playing the game.

Metro 2033 is released on March 19th and looks set to raise the benchmark i story driven fps games.

Red Faction Guerilla free with Metro 2033

THQ Inc. today announced that every PC format copy of Metro 2033 purchased on launch day in the UK will come with the complete PC version of acclaimed third-person open world shooter, Red Faction: Guerrilla, in the box.

Metro 2033 is scheduled for release in the UK on March 19, on Xbox 360 and PC DVD ROM.

Dmitry Glukhovsky’s debut novel, Metro 2033, has become a smash hit in Russia selling 500,000 copies and drawing more than 2 million online readers. The THQ videogame adaptation will be a global release, cementing Metro 2033 as an international brand, with interest from Hollywood producers and studios. Just 5 years ago things didn’t look as bright.

Dmitry Glukhovsky recalls his early days with the project ” Back in 2002, when I finished the first draft of Metro 2033, every single publisher I turned to declined the manuscript. The only explanation I got from them was “It’s not the right format”. Then I decided to publish the manuscript myself. I created a website and put the entire text of the novel on it which was available for free. In 2004, I decided to continue the book. I was publishing new chapters as soon as they were ready. My readers gave me enthusiastic feedback and criticism. I took their opinions into account and corrected the novel myself. Metro 2033 was born as an interactive, internet text.”

Since 2005, when the final version was published on the novel’s official website, the full text is still available online as open access. This has never prevented the book from becoming a bestseller and Dmitry is adding a follow up to the story even today.

Dmitry follows up “I have put all of my books, starting with Metro 2033, online and for free. I have also invited talented musicians and artists to co-create with me to transform the websites of these novels into multimedia art projects. Most authors today are afraid that internet piracy can harm their sales. I say: It works in the opposite way. Don’t be greedy, let those who can’t afford your book read it for free. In the long term, you’ll be the winner. Provided your book really is interesting.”

The UK edition of the book, Metro 2033, comes out at the same time as the game on March 18th. Priced at a reasonable £14.99 is is definitely an interesting and engaging read.

Dmitry comments on his views of the game. ” For me, getting my book turned into such a brilliant game is as big an honour for me as having it screened. The developers managed to preserve the most important things from the book: the spirit, the atmosphere, the emotions, the characters, the story and the philosophy. Generally, I think, turning books into games is a great idea: it could lure teenagers and other audiences that just do not read in principle and have never read books to read the original story. I say, go and make a videogame based on “Crime And Punishment”.

The game has been closely overseen by Dmitry to make sure the developers 4A games got the essence of and emotion of the original story and has commented that he is really happy with the outcome. Post apocalyptic themes have been heavy in the media to date but Metro 2033 takes a fresh approach on the subject in the book and the game.

Dmitry comments “You must be so used to – and bored – by another post-apocalyptic movie or game every other month. But, probably, for the first time, you’re getting a chance to see what’s happening on the other side of this war (presumably between the West and the East) that wipes out the mankind and destroys the world. It’s the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust seen by Russians. With the recent missile defense disputes and a possible new Cold war between Russia and the West, the book doesn’t look that much of a sci-fi does it?”

Dmitry’s story focusses on his time travelling on the Moscow Metro system and the facts that he discovered about the system being the biggest nuclear bunker in the world.

Dmitry tells of his school days and how the Metro system works. “I can call the Moscow Metro my home. As a kid, I used to spend two hours in the subway each day, getting from home to school and back. Some 3,500 hours during my school years. The very idea of Metro 2033 came to me when I learned that Moscow subway was engineered as the world’s biggest nuclear shelter. That it has connection to the secret governmental Metro-2. That it has hidden doors to some military bunkers. The I just put my imagination to work … And I am still surprised how far it has got me.”

Dmitry Glukhovsky takes his story from strength to strength and now encourages amateur writers to submit their Metro stories from all around the world which he helps publish. Along with PR for the game he is in negotiations with studio executives to try and also bring the story to the big screen.

Hands On: Metro 2033

Yesterday, Maturegaming got the chance to get hands on with THQ’s up and coming shooter, Metro 2033. The preview builds available were the 360 version and a look at one of the chapters on the PC in 3D. For all those gamers that have been hiding in a nuclear bunker for the past couple of months, Metro 2033 is a survival FPS set in the Moscow Metro system and based on the best selling novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Most stories about post apocalyptic events are normally scribed from a western point of view and it is refreshing then to see and read a narrative taken from the old Cold War’s arch enemies perspective instead. The game starts 20 years after a nuclear war had broken out in 2013. The use of the famous Metro system war bunkers meant the survival of a few lucky Muskovites who have inhabited the bunkers to re-create civilisations that have been plunged back into the dark ages. An entire generation have been born and raised underground, never knowing blue sky, sunshine, fresh air or clean water. The tales of the older generation are their only link to the past. Their Metro station cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await beyond the gates and tunnel walls.

Everything for survival has been re-created in these micro cities with only the bravest of Metro dwellers surfacing for supplies that cannot be reproduced underground like medicine, fuel and ammunition.

The story casts you as Artyom, who was born a few days before the big event but has been brought up underground and one fateful event has set you on a journey to Polis to warn the rest of mankind in this sprawling dystopia of a threat from what are called “The Dark Ones”.

With a pair of 5.1 cans on my head, a bottle of beer sitting next to me screaming at me to drink more I sat down to get my first taste of what’s to come before a presentation.

The first thing I realise that this is not just a game of shoot, shoot, kill, kill like most games in the genre. This is a deeply moving, engaging and atmospheric work of art that focuses on its narrative and design to give as much reality and credence to the book that the game is based on. Although linear in places (you are allowed to explore the settings though), Metro 2033 sets out its stall as a survival horror and is depicted well as you move through the initial chapters to show a dark, desolate and eerie hell that your character has to live in.

The first chapter introduces you to the fundamental moves within the game and at the same time explores some of innovations that could make this game stand out from its counterparts. The introduction of gas masks to use when going to the surface and having no HUD, for example, explore a level of depth that we rarely see in games of this genre. Gas masks can only be used for a certain period of time before de-stabalising and rather than having help in realising when you are at the point of no return you will have to rely on physically looking at your watch to see roughly what time you have left. The mask will start to frost up which starts to limit your view and adds to a sense of claustrophobia that Metro 2033 delivers through imaginative level designs of the Metro systems.

The 5.1 audio really helped me get a feel for the station where Artyom has been brought up. Stories, conversations and events that surround you are heard in the station and rather than just pass on by you start to edge towards where the conversations are coming from in a hope to pick up more of the back story or an individuals story which adds depth to an already rich environment.

The game also makes clear from the start that ammo is in short supply and weapons have been customised and created from the underground setting. Old world bullets become a source of currency and are more valuable than the shoddy underground bullets that are easier to find in the game. Artyom can use these bullets to trade for weapons and equipment as you become fully aware that survival is key and more powerful bullets will aid in YOUR survival. The weapon system and inventory is easily accessed and you are able to swap weaponry with ease.

I have also read that there were problems with an early build shown at the Moscow event (where was my bloody invite!!!) but from what I can see the game looks well balanced, delivers critical tension at the right times which leaves you with an unnerving sense of paranoia and jumpiness. The games fluidity in control and paced narrative has not let me down yet. Cut scenes and action sequences are implemented in the right places to move the story along in the right way, juxtapositoning back story, flashbacks and current events with ease.

I wanted to delve into further levels but time was against me, I had members of the development team to talk to, a presentation to watch and other media to catch up with but I can tell you this. If I had the chance and wasn’t so reliant on catching the last train home THQ event staff would have had a fight on their hands as they would have to drag me kicking and screaming to get me out of the door, or even through the window, such is my fascination with this game.

I was also presented with the first level of the PC version in 3D. All I can really say is that my jaw dropped at the spectacle I saw before me. Dust particles in the air around me, the moonlight shimmering through my crosshair towards me and the looking through the iron sight I saw a depth of gaming and an added dimension that I have never experienced before. It brought the world to you and not you into the world. For those that have the necessary kit to experience this in a 3D format I seriously encourage you to do so. Basically put, it is an IMAX immersion on steroids and one that will not be forgotten in a hurry.

So there you have it. Metro 2033 could be one of the biggest hitters this year. Some people will chastise the game for being a lone experience but I have come to an age where I want atmosphere, narrative driven games that offer something a little more than your standard game. I want immersion, I want originality and I want something that can not only deliver entertainment but makes me want to explore a world that has been created in a realism (in a game sense) that doesn’t seem as fictional as it may appear. Metro 2033 so far delivers on all fronts so with the novel in hand, a cup of coffee and waiting for the e-mail from THQ to say that I can play the game further before the review copy comes through I cannot recommend this game enough.

Metro 2033 gets 3D vision support

THQ Inc. and NVIDIA today announced that Metro 2033, the upcoming first person shooter from 4A Games, will support a number of advanced DX11 features with the latest generation of DX11 graphics cards, as well as NVIDIA 3D Vision support. Metro 2033 will also feature advanced, hardware accelerated physical effects using NVIDIA PhysX.

Gamers with DX11 cards will experience advanced Depth of Field effects as well as Full Tessellation on character models. You can see the results on the official Metro 2033 Flickr Collection at http://www.flickr.com/photos/metro2033 .

“Our engineers have been working closely with 4A Games to ensure that Metro 2033 takes full advantage of some of the spectacular effects made possible with the next generation of DX11 hardware,” said Tony Tamasi, Senior Vice President of Content and Technology at NVIDIA. “The 4A Engine is one of the most advanced game engines we’ve ever worked with, and with DX11 enabled, Metro 2033 is undoubtedly one of the best looking PC games of 2010. Combine this with NVIDIA 3D Vision and PhysX and you will experience mind-blowing visuals.”

Metro is scheduled for release in North America and Germany on the 16^th March, Australia on the 18^th March, and in the UK and the rest of Europe on the 19^th March, on Xbox 360 and PC.

Metro 2033 to be playable in original language

Yuppers, quite a few people asked if this was possible to keep the originality of the game.THQ has answered the question this morning by informing the gaming public that Metro 2033 will be playable in its original Russian language with English subtitles if you so desire.

Metro 2033 is due to be released in March for PC and 360 and the Russian voiceover option will available on both formats!
