With the launch of the Wii U games console now upon us, one of the most eagerly-anticipated titles by many will be New Super Mario Bros. U. But what are the features and special modes of the game that will add a new dimension to the platform adventure series that has had us all captivated since 1983?
Going for gold with Coin Battle Mode
The great thing about the Super Mario games that have appeared on Nintendo’s many consoles over the years is that, while they’ve always been great for solo play, they’ve also offered the opportunity to challenge others. In this new adventure, up to four individual players can race their way through a level, in a bid to emerge with the biggest haul of gold coins at the end of it. The Wii U GamePad can also be used in Boost Mode to place Boost Blocks that will help you get to the coins that are harder to reach, as well as create customised courses.
Going for goals with Challenge Mode
While taking on your friends and family with Coin Battle Mode will be a great way to play New Super Mario Bros. U with others, there are also some great options for solo play. One of these is the Challenge Mode, in which you’ll be given a very specific task to achieve – for example, clearing a course without touching the ground or picking up any coins – with four single-player categories of challenge. These include Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally and miscellaneous challenges in a category known as ‘Special’.
Going where you like with a new World Map
The Mushroom Kingdom has always been a great place to explore and with a new World Map, New Super Mario Bros. U becomes the first side-scrolling Mario game since 1992’s to feature such a seamless layout of levels and zones to enjoy. Typically, not all will be what it seems with this map – so keep an eye out for special, secret shortcuts and exits. And while you are exploring these places, be on the lookout for the mysterious ‘Nabbit’. This creature will occasionally pop up on your World map and when he does, you’ll need to catch it if you want to get special items like the P-Acorn that lets you fly continuously.
New Super Mario Bros. U will be launched exclusively on the Wii U on 30th November – and looks certain to be popular with new gamers and fans of the franchise alike.
