Game wars continue as Supermarkets offer Modern Warfare 2 cheap

written by gazzara on 10.11.09

The next chapter in the supermarket war broke out yesterday and today as Morrisons and Sainsbury’s step up to offer Modern Warfare 2 for £26.In a bold move and something that is not uncommon nowadays with Supermarkets, Sainsbury’s announced that Modern Warfare 2 was going on sale for £26 as mentioned in TV ads and also in national papers.

At the time Morrisons were left the only supermarket not to show their hand but Maturegaming can reveal that this morning they are undercutting Sainsbury’s price by 1p and selling at £25.99.  Normally the 2 big players in Asda and Tesco are the ones that normally do this practice but it is the two slightly smaller supermarkets that are kicking up a stink this time around.

It is expected that Tesco and Asda may follow suit but at this time no confirmation has been given.  This sort of practice has nullified what Activision were trying to achieve with their price guide for Modern Warfare 2 being £55.  This sort of undercutting will also have a knock on effect to the industry as trade in prices, devaluation of the product and the market gets further cut down to size.

Something has to be done about this as this is unfair competition, isnt this breaking some kind of trade laws or fair trading rules?

thing is this can be good for gamers but then bad for independant stores. yes I like paying less but I'd rather pay an average price and keep hard working and enthusiastic game shop owners in business then putting smaller funds into big faceless businesses.

I'm pickle btw, name not showing for some reason :)
