Forza League Div 2 report – MG = fun!

19.01.2010

It was my first outing into an MG.com Forza race, I had practised some with the required 2003 Mini Cooper. It was tuned up using NickSaints’s excellent tune, giving this Mini the highest performance index possible in Forza 3, and I wasn’t alone. The other drivers in the race were all maxed out on the Performance Index, many I suspect using Nick’s tune-up too.

The race was due to start at 20:30 GMT, but most were logged in at the suggested 20:20. Once logged on and the party invite accepted, I greeted my fellow racers. All was calm and jovial, but already my palms were feeling a little bit sweaty… I was feeling nervous.

I thought I should have been confident as earlier during a ‘hot-lap’ practising session, in the same race car and on the same circuit, I managed a time that put me in the top 1% in the world, according to the Forza leaderbord stats. Yet my heart began to quicken as the start of the race drew nearer.

I found myself starting second on the grid, on the ‘dirty’ side of the track. I had hoped to be near the back, as previous online ‘public’ races, suggested this was the safest place to start, given the ‘first corner’ shenanigans that often takes place. Cars running wide others literally ‘rammed’ off the track. I needn’t have fretted, as a brief watch of the replay video showed, everyone in this race tried NOT to run into anyone else. Nice.

My first shock of the race came as soon as the race got under-way, the road came to an end much quicker the expected as I was frantically braking to make the first corner. This was definitely not the circuit I was expecting nor the one I practised on. Others seemed surprised too, but we cracked on with the race regardless.

I had a poor start, though only dropping one place within the first few laps. A few bad corners though was enough for me to decide to take the mandatory, single pit-stop. This brought me out into clean air, and so I felt that I had the track all to myself for a lot of the race.

It wasn’t until lap 13, where the incident of all incidents took place, and ‘Mark K 74′ found himself and his car spinning vertically, with the boot of the car firmly planted on the ground, and that is where he remained for a few laps, or so it seemed.

Everyone laughed including Mark, what an amazing incident. I will be shocked if Turn 10 and the Forza online community do not get to hear and see, this incident (see photo above).

Well, the remainder of the laps were mostly uneventful, bar being hunted down towards the end by ‘Cleric Boomer’, who put in some sterling effort.

I managed to finish 4th, not bad for my first outing. The guys were great, there were laughs a plenty, and the racing was clean. What more can you ask. I can’t wait for the next race.
